The purpose of the Food Pantry and
The Clothes Closet is to eliminate hunger and homelessness by providing food, shelter, and self-help assistance to families and individuals.
Our Food Pantry partners, through
Hope-Net, with 14 other congregations in the Wilshire Center to support
nine local food pantries. The pantries work together, ensuring that at least one is open each day to provide emergency food to those in need.
People who are homeless can receive a sack lunch. Those who have
shelter but are struggling to make ends meet, can receive a monthly bag of groceries.
We provide assistance to:
 |
people
who are hungry |
 |
those
who don't have shelter, who often live in doorways and alleys. |
 |
families where the
parent is working two minimum wage jobs and struggles to make ends meet to feed the
children. |
 |
elderly
people, living on limited fixed incomes |
Sometimes, in serving food to others, we are served the blessing of a heartfelt thank you or by finding the face of Jesus in the eyes of a hungry person.
We also serve a light breakfast to people as they come to the Pantry and offer free or low-cost clothes.
The Food Pantry and Clothes Closet are supervised by Genevieve Dorbor and staffed by a team of volunteers from Immanuel.
The Immanuel congregation supports the Food Pantry's efforts through financial gifts and donations of food and clothing.
The Food Pantry (which is located
in the basement, with the entrance on Catalina Street) opens to volunteers around
9:30 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays
to prepare bags and sack lunches. At 11:30, people are invited in for coffee and a light breakfast. We serve the food and offer the Pantry as a place of rest, safety and conversation. At
1:00 p.m., we close up shop, clean and set up for the next day.
If you have clothes or food or reading material that you would like to donate, you can drop them off at the
Church Office at Immanuel marked "Food Pantry"
