Immanuel Presbyterian Church was
founded on September 3, 1888. For over a century, Immanuel has
left its gentle and devoted mark on the hearts and souls of
thousands of Southern Californians of all races, backgrounds and
lifestyles.
No city in the world has changed
as dramatically as Los Angeles and Immanuel has always been an
integral part of the City of Angels.
In 1888 Los Angeles was a sleepy
pueblo 500 miles south of the post-Gold Rush area that
established San Francisco as the major West Coast port and Sacramento the
capital of the state. Today, Los Angeles is the premier center
of the entire Pacific Rim. Its impact is felt in Mexico, Central
and South America, the Philippines and other Asian nations, from
Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia to Singapore.
The Los Angeles of today has huge
new centers of population for each of these constituencies. The congregation of Immanuel is a reflection of the
"new" population which presents new challenges,
problems and opportunities each day of the year.
In its early days Immanuel met
many challenges in the community. The church was influential in the
establishment of The Union Rescue Mission and The Bible
Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA) under the leadership of Lyman
Stewart, an Elder of Immanuel. The church also maintained a
close association with the Hollywood Presbyterian
Hospital.
Today Immanuel continues to meet
these challenges.. We established HOLA (Heart of Los
Angeles Youth). HOLA, now a separate organization from Immanuel,
serves the surrounding community through a multi-cultural center that provides
quality arts, athletic, and educational programs
for at-risk school-age youth, giving them realistic alternatives to drugs and gang lifestyles.
Immanuel also partners with many organizations such as HopeNet,
QueensCare Health and Faith Partnership, and El Camino
Counseling Center to engage the diverse community of Wilshire Center.
Immanuel Presbyterian Church
continues to be a spiritual partner with Los Angeles and the
surrounding area in meeting and solving the challenges and
problems of life in a large metropolis.
